The GROUND Probe is ISWR’s primary field instrument for studying tornadoes and severe weather. Designed for durability and portability, it collects real-time data on wind speed, direction, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and rainfall using an Ecowitt WS90 sensor. A central acrylic dome houses a camera and GPS tracker, allowing us to capture high-definition storm footage and accurately locate the probe after deployment.
With its low-profile base and weather-resistant design, the GROUND Probe can be safely deployed in the path of severe storms to provide crucial ground-level measurements. The data gathered supports research into tornado formation, storm behavior, and contributes to improving severe weather forecasting and public safety.
